What happens at Alert Level 4
To stop the spread of COVID-19, gathering together for funerals and tangi is not permitted while New Zealand is at Alert Level 4.
This applies to all deceased persons, regardless of when and where they died, or the cause of death.
It includes gatherings at burials, cremations, memorial services, open or closed caskets or viewings, funeral wakes, processions or receptions and social gatherings, both indoors and outdoors.
We must protect people’s health and ensure our health system can look after all people in New Zealand who become sick.
Bereaved families and whānau from all cultures and backgrounds will find this time challenging. This makes it even more important that we show each other kindness and caring, manaakitanga and aroha.
Funeral Directors provide essential services and will continue working during Level 4. They will be able to guide you on the best options for your situation, which may include:
- livestreaming services on social media, or videoing them for later viewing
- holding the funeral or tangi after the Alert Level 4 restrictions ease. Bear in mind that we don’t know when that might be, and there might be practical or cultural reasons why this is not an option.
- holding a memorial service later, when restrictions on gatherings are lifted and it is safe to do so.
At this stage in the response, it is important to continue embalming as this is the best way to manage the deceased person.
The risk COVID-19 from this procedure is low.
Embalming as soon as possible is the current recommendation.
Viewing of bodies and funerals
The Ministry clarified that funerals and viewing of bodies must not be undertaken during level 3 and 4 alerts as per the Government decision. From the point at which you transfer the deceased into your care their family & friends are not permitted any further contact with the deceased. However, bodies can potentially be embalmed and stored for funerals at a later date once the alert levels are lifted.
We will have ongoing discussions and negotiations into areas which still concern us greatly, particularly in relation to viewings, however at this time we are bound by the Governments directives.
